Mark Epstein is a photographer and lecturer. His work grows out of a need to find and tell stories in a belief it is through such stories we create ourselves and are created. We understand the worlds in which we live by spinning stories through time in an ongoing process of recreation, retelling and revising those worlds.
Photography cannot be a way of simply signifying a life as lived, but rather, it selects and emphasises, and makes noticeable moments that would otherwise have passed without note. It is a way of memory-making, my own as much as those I photograph. Photography can also be kind if we want it to be.
I have a Master’s in documentary photography and one in literature and have worked as a senior language tutor at the University of Manchester. These have come together in a practice that combines making photographs and using language to expand, describe, contextualise, learn and teach. I work on commissions, private projects and one-off events like portraits, weddings and ceremonies.
